Hey everyone! This week we have a fan request by WenC. They're wondering how to play "We're Going To Be Friends" by The White Stripes. This is actually a really good one if you're just getting into fingerpicking, and to help you solidify your basic chord shapes.
For help with fingerstyle check out my latest course, Fingerpicking Mastery: https://goodguitarist.com/fingerpicking-mastery/
I also have other premium courses (Beginner to Intermediate) available to improve your chords, strumming, barre chords and more: https://courses.goodguitarist.com/
And don't forget to grab your copy of my free eBook: https://goodguitarist.com/learn-rhythm-guitar/
There aren't too many chords in this one, it's mostly G C and D, with a Cadd9 (even though the symbol looks crazy, it's actually a really simple fingering) and an A chord to top it off. We go over some switching tips to help you get a clean sound, and then move onto the fingerpicking.
It was actually really interested for me, coming up with a way to explain this pattern. It mainly uses the thumb and 1 finger, and throughout the song the pattern varies so there's a lot of room for experimentation. I recommend using the patterns from this video, and once your comfortable I really encourage you to experiment with switching it up a bit and focusing on "feeling it" rather than playing it perfectly every time. Since the chords and pattern are so simple, I can't emphasize enough how important it is to actually enjoy yourself and get lost in the tune!
I hope you have fun practicing this and good luck!
'Til next time!
