The Trek Marlin 5 Mountain bike is an entry level mtb priced to be considered an affordable bicycle for new riders. Other riders may also like the Marlin for it's low cost of around $550. For a beginner this is a popular choice local as it works great on the local trails. While I'm sure an experienced rider could find some fun, they would likely not be impressed with the drivetrain and Tourney rear derailleur.
Overall, I think the Marlin is a great choice as it gives new riders a quality name, Trek, and a local bike shop buying and service experience.
Thanks to my local bike shop, the Spinning Spoke, for letting me take a look at the his bike.
