We love catching seals that we've named! It does not happen very often that we allocate names to seals, but when an animal leaves a mark on us he gets one....
Naude and Antoine had 2 encounters earlier this year dealing with a large seal they called Black Tie. He had an old, frayed black packing strap around his neck, and proved to be a very fast, strong and also quite aggressive individual.
In September, while doing a kayak patrol Naude and Denzil saw him again after nearly 3 months! Luckily he was high up on the beach and they had a chance to intercept him before he could reach the water. After a sprint, the seal actually turned towards the rescuers and charged straight at them, mouth open! They could could get him in the net, and managed to get the old strap off, but not without a fight!
