Menopause; no period for an entire year
Perimenopause; woman is reaching menopause ( few years prior to menopause )
In India: Avg. menopause age is 48 years. Earlier than 48 years is Early Menopause.
Earlier than 40 years is Premature Menopause
Perimenopausal women may have the following :
More frequent or less frequent cycles, this is a common complain. Prolonged bleeding or bleeding after sex or heavy periods with clots/flooding.
They may need an evaluation by Gynaecologist. A thorough history is taken to evaluate hormonal problems.
Local examination is done to rule out, infection, vaginitis, atrophy or fibroids.
Pap smear is done to rule out cervical cancer.
Endometrial Hyperplasia is a common finding this may sometimes lead to endometrial cancer. Hence, symptoms should not be neglected.
Pap smear is recommended once in every 3 years for sexually active women up to the age of 65 years. Pap smear is a simple test to detect abnormal cells in the neck of the womb. It helps early detection of cervical cancer. Endometrial cancer evaluation is also important for this biopsy of uterus lining is done. Early detection prevents progression to cancer.
