The first step in getting OPT is to apply for an OPT I-20 from the Office of International Education. You will need to submit a few documents to our front desk. Make sure each form is 100% complete before you submit them.
1. First, you need to submit an original form I-765. Make sure to type it instead of writing by hand. Here are some important instructions on the I-765
a. On question 1, make sure to have your names clearly separated. If your first and family names are too close together, it may appear incorrectly on your OPT card.
b. On question #3, leave your address blank. OIE will use our address in this space.
c. On question 11, choose "yes" if you have ever applied for work authorization from USCIS. For example, past OPT or economic hardship. The USCIS office will be the first three letters of your OPT card number, and the dates will be the dates printed on your EAD. Choose "no" if you have never applied for work authorization from USCIS.
d. Question 16 - Write C 3 B for post-completion OPT. Instructions for pre-completion OPT and STEM extension are in later videos.
e. When you're all finished, print the I-765 and sign it in the correct place.
2. Next, you'll need UTA's OPT application form. This form requires you to choose your OPT start date. We talk about that in another video. Third, you'll need to read and sign the OPT Status Maintenance form
3. Next, your academic advisor will need to fill out the Completion of Program form and
4. Finally, submit a confirmation of payment of the $100 OPT case management fee from MyMav
After you submit your application to OIE, an advisor will look over everything and confirm that you are eligible for OPT. If you are eligible, we will shorten your I-20 expiration date to show the actual completion date. Then, we'll print a new I-20 for you that includes the recommended OPT dates, and you will receive an email that your I-20 is ready.
When you have your I-20, it's time to get everything ready to mail your application to USCIS.
