Have you ever wondered why there are so many different ways to get rid of back pain? Some people swear by yoga, others say it hurts their back, some say pilates, other say it doesn’t work. How can this be? It’s usually because activities like yoga or pilates aren’t specific enough to the back. They don’t focus on the hips, and upper back enough which means some people will find benefit and others won’t.
I was just 18 when a car crash left me with a numb foot and back pain. I distinctly remember driving to the physical therapist and collapsing in the carpark due to the pain. At the time I played rugby and Judo and was one of the most physical kids around. I wanted to fix my back and this led me on a journey, along the way I became an exercise physiologist, an osteopath, a Somatic Educator, a MovNat coach and a specialist in back pain and scoliosis.
I’m constantly looking at and developing different ways to help people with back pain. I take simple principles and put them in to practice. If you have back pain I want you to try this.
This is a simple exercise called the Hip Hinge Matrix. It uses corrective body weight exercises to decompress the spine, relieve pain and acts as a counter to the problems caused by the common postures of modern living. It doesn’t require any equipment and also doesn’t need to be done in one go.
You can easily break it up into 5 minute chances, in fact I recommend you do that the first time you try it as it’s pretty intense. Do this every day and you’ll increase your strength, flexibility and endurance of your spine and legs so that you can get back to living life to the full in no time.
