How to Compose 1:1 Counterpoint
Published at : 08 Dec 2020
This video teaches how to compose a counter melody against a given melody in a 1:1 rhythmic proportion (also known as note-against-note, or first species counterpoint). This was the method that many of the great classical composers used to learn the essentials of voice-leading in Western music, including Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven.
We start by learning the basic rules of this kind of exercise by looking at an example by Schubert and his teacher Salieri (1:53).
Then, I complete an exercise and talk through my thought process (22:30).
Finally, I leave the student with three kinds of homework: Composition Exercises; Audiation Exercises; and Analytic Diagrams (31:58).
