Photography is inherently a medium of realistic expression but aided by the creativity of the photographer and various techniques available to him today, it can uniquely transcend the immediate realism to abstract and yes, the extraordinary. To that extent, it is a more powerful medium to show the objects beyond the reach of paintings and other handmade forms of visual arts. Nothwithstanding the tradionalists’ view, photography is progressively more fecund today’s art scenario including museums like Museum of Modern Art/NY and also auctioned regularly at major houses like Christie’s and Sotheby’s, at times for millions. View it as an artwork and it offers a vast spectrum of expressions in myriad hues and tones devised through motley games of light and added to that the spontaneity of capturing a variety of moments through the lens of a camera which can breathe and blow something special in an artwork. To understand this subject better, Sudhanshu Mani is in discussion with Mr. Anil Risal Singh, the reputed photographer. He is an artist and an art lover with a unique stockpile range of creative expressions including landscape photography or presentation of artistic forms. He has been perusing photography as a medium of fine arts for the last 45 years starting in 1967 when his father gifted him an Agfa Isoly camera. While his B&W landscapes are marvelous pieces of art, he has done tremendous experiments in capturing the forms, organized a solo exhibition of his pictures depicting forms and shapes.
